Incorporate a Sdn Bhd first, then go looking for grant money. That is the order most Malaysian founders are given, and for the biggest early-stage Cradle grant Malaysia offers, it is backwards.
Cradle Fund runs two grants under the Cradle Investment Programme. CIP Spark pays up to RM150,000 and accepts an application from two individuals with no company at all. CIP Sprint pays up to RM600,000 and accepts nothing except a Sdn Bhd. So the useful question is not whether you feel ready to incorporate. It is which of the two you qualify for today.

Those two columns are rungs on one ladder. Spark needs no registration at all. Sprint is four times the money, on the far side of an incorporation.
Can you get a Cradle grant without a Sdn Bhd?
For Spark, yes. Cradle's own page says so in one line:

So the company route is wider than people assume: LLP, Enterprise and Sdn Bhd all qualify, provided the entity is under five years old, revenue sits below RM3 million, and you own the IP or hold an exclusive licence.
The part sole proprietors miss is the stage rule. Spark takes applications from ideation, prototype development and product enhancement. Asked whether you need traction before applying, Cradle answers not necessarily: it depends on your stage of product development. A working prototype or MVP is expected by the end of the funding, not before it starts.
What CIP Sprint asks for that CIP Spark does not
Sprint's criteria page has one column, not two. It is headed COMPANIES, and line one is Sdn Bhd.

There is no individual route, so a sole proprietor has nothing to apply with. Ask Cradle whether you need traction first and the answer is yes.
Put that list next to Spark's and the incorporation question finally has a price on it. What a Sdn Bhd buys you is access to the RM450,000 gap between the two ceilings.
Cradle grant Malaysia: what neither page tells you
Find yourself in a column before reading another eligibility list.
Both grants are conditional. Recipients are subject to paying back the amount disbursed if the funding agreement is terminated, and Cradle's grants page calls Sprint conditional and convertible on top of that. Neither has the shape of a non-matching grant like MDEC's Digital Content Grant, whose Marketing and Commercialisation Grant funds up to 100% of project cost with nothing from you, but which no sole proprietor can apply for. Money also arrives by advance payment and reimbursement against milestones, not as a lump sum.
Approval takes roughly two to four months from pitching. Cradle publishes no window and no closing date for either grant, so there is no deadline to plan a runway against.
Two questions sit open. Cradle's pages do not say whether an individual approved for Spark must then incorporate to receive the funds. Nor do they say how a founder's own build time is costed, which matters when 60% must go to development and your development is you.
Our take: that second question decides whether RM150,000 is really RM150,000. If founder time cannot be claimed, the developmental 60% has to go to people you hold invoices for, and a two-person team's real ceiling sits lower. Worth an email before it is worth a pitch deck.
How to apply for a Cradle grant
Register on Cradle's Grant Management System and submit a pitch deck on their template. Verification documents are only requested once you are shortlisted, so your first submission is a deck and nothing else.
If what you are building is ordinary business software rather than a fundable innovation, Malaysia Digital status and the MDEC schemes are a better use of the afternoon.
Work out which Cradle grant you qualify for today
Do not incorporate to become eligible. Read three lines off your own SSM record first: what you are registered as, how many years ago, and your revenue to date. Those three facts, against the table above, tell you which grant you can apply for this week.

The answer decides whether incorporating belongs before your application or after it, and only Cradle can settle it.
