
Kota Kinabalu: A civil servant was sentenced to one day’s jail and fined a total of RM72,000 on 30 counts of bribery-related offences involving a sum of RM36,300.
Mahriyatty Ag. Bahrin, 45, had changed her plea in the midst of the hearing and pleaded guilty to all the charges against her on Wednesday.

The prosecution had already called 26 witnesses but then Mahriyatty decided to write a representation letter through her counsel.

She was ordered to serve the jail sentences concurrently.
Advertisement (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});All the 30 charges were under Section 165 of the Penal Code for obtaining money ranging between RM500 and RM3,000 from individuals whom she knew had connections to her official duties.
The charges against Mahriyatty, among others, stated that she asked and accepted bribes from contractors, used her position to get bribes and submitted false claims relating to CIDB certificates, Bumiputera Status certificates (STB) and contractor certificates for several companies.

Counsel Zahir Shah represented Mahriyatty who had paid the fine.
