THE number of civilian deaths in Cambodia has risen to 21 as fighting along the Thailand–Cambodia border entered its 17th day, according to Cambodian defence officials.
Cambodia’s Ministry of Defence spokesperson, Lieutenant General Maly Socheata, said the increase followed attacks by Thai military forces that struck areas in the provinces of Banteay Meanchey, Preah Vihear and Oddar Meanchey.
“The attacks have resulted in damage to several public facilities,” Reuters reported her saying on Wednesday during a press briefing.
Meanwhile, Cambodia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation urged both sides to respect the ceasefire agreement signed in October.
Its spokesperson, Nong Sakal, called on Thailand and Cambodia to comply fully with the truce in order to prevent further civilian suffering and escalation of hostilities.
The border conflict between the two neighbours reignited on December 7, with both sides accusing each other of initiating the latest round of clashes.
According to the latest figures released by Cambodia’s Ministry of Interior, the fighting has so far forced more than 545,000 people to flee their homes, underscoring the growing humanitarian impact of the renewed conflict. - December 24, 2025
