VICE President of Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) Chang Lih Kang has rubbished claims that 11 of the party’s Members of Parliament have withdrawn their support for Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, calling the rumour “nonsense”.
Chang, who also serves as Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, responded to a viral message circulated via WhatsApp, which alleged a mass withdrawal of support from several PKR MPs.
“(Datuk Seri) Rafizi and Nik Nazmi resigned from Cabinet to uphold decorum and the spirit of democracy,” Chang stated in a Facebook post on Wednesday. “The rest need not fish in troubled waters. Full stop.”
The WhatsApp message, screenshots of which have been widely shared, claimed that 11 MPs had withdrawn their backing for Anwar and would be holding a press conference this coming Friday to announce the move.
Among those named in the message were Vice President Datuk Seri Aminuddin Harun; Johor Bahru MP Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir; Batu Pahat MP Onn Abu Bakar; Ledang MP Syed Ibrahim Syed Noh; Subang MP Wong Chen; and Gopeng MP Tan Kar Hing, in addition to Rafizi Ramli and Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad.
The claim emerged shortly after Rafizi and Nik Nazmi announced they had submitted their letters of resignation from Cabinet, effective 17 June and 4 July respectively, following their defeats in the recent PKR party elections.
Rafizi will be on leave from Thursday until 16 June, while Nik Nazmi’s leave extends until 3 July. The Prime Minister’s Office has confirmed receipt of their resignation letters, stating that further decisions on their resignations will be made at the proper time. - May 29, 2025
