Claude for Startups Paused Its Free Year. What's Left?

Updated 10 October 2026: Anthropic paused the free year of Claude Team and the US$1,000 API credit on 9 October. We've rewritten this post to match.

Is Claude still free for startups? Not right now. On 9 October 2026, three days after opening Claude for Startups to more companies, Anthropic paused the programme's two big offers: a free year of Claude Team and a one-time US$1,000 API credit. No page says when, or whether, they'll return. Here's what still stands, and what to do if you applied.

What Anthropic paused, and why

Anthropic gave the reason on X:

"Unfortunately, we underestimated demand for the program, and we need to pause the Claude Team and $1,000 API credit offers."

The programme page now says Anthropic received "hundreds of thousands of applications over the past few days" and is "over capacity" on both offers. It also says it is "reshaping the Claude Startups program", without saying how.

If you applied but didn't claim

Approval alone may not be enough. Anthropic is re-reviewing applications from everyone who hasn't claimed the offer yet, and its post warns that "some accounts who had already been approved will not get access to the offer."

If you already claimed the free Team year or the credit, you keep it. The page says: "If you've already claimed the offer, nothing changes; you can use the offer in the account."

If you haven't claimed it, don't buy seats or plan a build on the hope that it comes through. The page says Anthropic aims to review each application within a week and emails you with the decision.

What Claude for Startups still offers

The page still takes applications, and members keep the rest of the programme. The main part is the Claude Startup Stack: discounts and credits from companies that build with Claude, worth up to US$45,000 in all. Those companies make the offers, not Anthropic. On the page today they include US$5,000 of ClickHouse Cloud credits and 12 months of ElevenLabs free.

Members can also book office hours, 45-minute live sessions with Anthropic's Applied AI team held every other week, and join Claude Startups events, hackathons and meetups.

You don't need VC money to apply. The page says the programme is open to bootstrapped, pre-seed and venture-backed startups. If a VC in Anthropic's partner network backs you, you may be eligible for up to US$100,000 in extra API credits through that VC. The page doesn't name those VCs.

Malaysia isn't on the programme's excluded-country list and is on Anthropic's supported-countries list, though no page names it as eligible.

The paid route: Claude Team with monthly API credit

If your team needs Claude now, paying is the reliable way in. Claude Team is for 2 to 150 people. A Standard seat lists at US$20 a month (about RM 82) and a Premium seat at US$100 (about RM 409), billed annually. Two Standard seats come to US$480 a year, about RM 1,960.

Paid Team seats now come with monthly API credit, and the programme page confirms that Team and Max plans still get it "in Console as usual." Once you pay, budget for possible withholding tax on foreign software.

What the free year was worth before the pause

This is what the paused offer was worth at Anthropic's list prices. It's useful if you claimed it, or if you're comparing it with what you'd pay.

What the offer includedUS$About RM
5 Premium seats for 12 months6,00024,500
One-time API credit1,0004,085
Two-person team: 2 seats plus the credit3,40013,900

Anthropic put the full package at up to US$7,000, about RM 28,600. We never added the partner offers in, because other companies provide them.

If you claimed it, plan for month 13

No Anthropic page says whether the free year rolls into a paid plan, or at what price. At today's list price, two Premium seats cost US$2,400 a year (about RM 9,800).

  1. Note your claim date and set a reminder for month 10.
  2. By month 11, decide who needs Premium and who can drop to a US$20 Standard seat.
  3. Spend the US$1,000 credit on a real project. When we read the page on 7 October, it said credits expire six months after they're granted. That answer has since come off the page.

Our take

We use Claude Code every day at Gotchaa Lab, and we don't blame Anthropic for running out. It explained the pause, apologised, and let people keep what they had claimed. But some founders who were approved and waited to claim will now miss out.

So when a vendor offers you something free, claim it the day you see it. And don't build a plan around a promo. Price your tools at list price and treat a free year as a bonus, especially if it would tie every workflow to one AI vendor. As with Salesforce's startup programme, work out year two before you count on year one.

Rules and prices may change; check Anthropic's pages before applying or paying. Ringgit figures are our conversion at Bank Negara Malaysia's 6 October 2026 rate (RM 4.0853 per US$1). Not financial advice.
