During a heavy downpour today, a series of tree falls wreaked havoc on several vehicles in Melaka, including a police patrol car escorting Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusof’s convoy. The incident occurred on Jalan Pinang, where a tree collapsed, damaging eight vehicles but narrowly avoiding Ab Rauf's car.
According to the Kuala Lumpur Fire and Rescue Department operations center, the police escort car was one of three cars and five motorcycles affected in the Jalan Pinang incident. Fortunately, there were no casualties reported from these accidents.
Aside from Jalan Pinang, another tree-falling event damaged two cars at the Medical Faculty and Examination Building of Universiti Malaya's car park. Additionally, in Taman Gembira, Jalan Kuchai Lama, two uprooted trees caused damage to a house during the hour-long downpour.
Responding swiftly, Kuala Lumpur City Hall initiated operations to clear the fallen trees and debris from the affected areas. The incident on Jalan Pinang, where Ab Rauf's convoy narrowly escaped harm, happened as they were passing the area in front of Kuwait Bank around 3:30 pm.
Ezlyn Fardiha Zainal, Ab Rauf's press secretary, recounted the close call, mentioning that the tree fell right in front of Ab Rauf's car but hit an escorting Proton X70 police patrol car instead. The damage was limited to the back windscreen and bonnet of the police car, with Ab Rauf's vehicle remaining unscathed.
Confirming the incident, Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Rusdi Mohd Isa stated that they received a report regarding the police vehicle involved, which served as the lead car in Ab Rauf's convoy. Thankfully, both the driver and passenger in the Proton X70 escaped without injuries.
The series of tree falls highlights the potential dangers posed by extreme weather conditions and the importance of prompt response and safety measures to mitigate such risks. Authorities continue to monitor and address these issues to ensure public safety during adverse weather events.
