TMW says Britain's richest man is now close to sealing a deal with the Glazer family for United.
A fee of over 4bn is about to be settled.
Ratcliffe's spokesman announced his company INEOS's interest in United last month.
There had been press claims of the Glazers seeking to sell for 6-9bn.
