MORE than 114,000 members of the People’s Justice Party (PKR) took part in the party’s internal branch-level elections today, involving the states of Selangor, Melaka, and Perlis.
The polls covered three categories: (branch leadership), (women’s wing), and Angkatan Muda Keadilan (PKR youth wing).
The voting process proceeded smoothly throughout the day, with results expected to be announced tonight.
According to PKR Selangor Deputy Chairman Datuk Borhan Aman Shah around 98,000 members in the state were eligible to vote. A significant majority opted for the party’s digital voting system.
“Approximately 98.5 percent of members are expected to cast their votes online, while the remaining voters are doing so in person—likely comprising senior citizens or those unfamiliar with the digital system,” he said when contacted by Bernama.
Borhan added that polling activities across Selangor had proceeded without incident and that results could be available later this evening, provided the smooth flow continues.
In Melaka, 11,318 registered PKR members exercised their right to vote. According to Muhammad Asri Ibrahim, Secretary of the PKR Melaka State Leadership Council (MPN), voting was carried out both digitally and in-person for a small group.
“This includes 3,558 voters in Hang Tuah Jaya, 2,495 in Alor Gajah, 1,667 in Tangga Batu, 1,627 in Melaka Tengah, 1,200 in Kota Melaka, and 771 in Jasin,” he said.
“Of the total voters, 94 are casting their votes physically at the Melaka International Trade Centre (MITC), mostly senior citizens and persons with disabilities (OKU). The rest are using the online platform,” he added.
With polling closing at 5pm, the state party expects to announce its results as early as 7pm this evening.
In Perlis, around 5,000 members are eligible to vote across the constituencies of Kangar, Arau, and Padang Besar. According to PKR Perlis Chairman Noor Amin Ahmad, voting was also carried out using both digital and physical means.
“The branch elections in Perlis are progressing well. While there have been some technical glitches, they have not affected the overall conduct of the voting process,” he said, adding that in-person voting took place at a hotel in Kangar.
The internal branch-level elections for PKR, including the women’s and youth wings, will run until 20 April. Meanwhile, voting for the party’s Central Leadership Council (MPP), the Central Women’s Council (MPWP), and the Central Youth Council (MPAMKP) is scheduled to take place on 24 May. – April 12, 2025
