Deputy PM confirms cloud seeding operations generated significant rainfall in northern states, with efforts continuing today at key dam catchment areas.
PUTRAJAYA: Cloud seeding operations carried out yesterday were successful, generating significant rainfall in Kedah and Perlis. Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi confirmed the success based on data from observation stations and the Malaysian Meteorological Department’s MyRAE system.
In Perlis, rainfall between 10mm and 45mm was recorded from 7 pm to 8 pm. Kedah saw readings ranging from 6mm to 57.4mm from 7 pm to 10 pm.
“This success proves that the implementation of OPA under suitable atmospheric conditions is highly effective,” said Ahmad Zahid, who chairs the National Disaster Management Committee. He described it as an intervention to increase rainfall in dam catchment areas affected by recent dry weather.
The operations targeted 11 major dams under alert, warning and critical categories in Perak, Kedah, Perlis and Johor from April 6 to 8. They will continue today, focusing on the Temenggor and Bukit Merah dam catchment areas in Perak.
Yesterday’s operations targeted the Muda, Pedu and Ahning dams in Kedah and Timah Tasoh dam in Perlis. The technique involved dispersing salt solutions into towering cumulus clouds using a Royal Malaysian Air Force C130 Hercules aircraft.
Meteorological analysis indicated highly active convective clouds in the target areas. The operation’s effectiveness was supported by high atmospheric moisture and unstable conditions, which enhance rain cloud development after seeding.
Ahmad Zahid said such integrated efforts show preparedness and science-based actions are key defences against climate change. He assured the government will strengthen these proactive approaches to safeguard water security and agricultural sustainability.
