Cloud seeding to tackle haze as PM2.5 levels stay high in Klang Valley

RESIDENTS in Selangor, Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya are facing sustained elevated levels of fine particulate matter, prompting the government to deploy cloud seeding today and tomorrow to help ease the haze.

National Disaster Management Agency (NADMA) director-general Datuk Meor Ismail Meor Akim said the operation followed PM2.5 readings exceeding 150 for more than 24 hours in the affected areas, based on Department of Environment (DOE) data.

The operation will involve NADMA, the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia), Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM) and Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF), with a C-130 Hercules aircraft serving as the main asset.

“The operation is among the government’s efforts to help reduce the impact of haze and improve air quality in affected areas.

“However, the implementation of the operation is subject to weather conditions and the presence of suitable clouds for the seeding process,” he said in a statement today.

NADMA and the agencies involved will continue monitoring the haze and prevailing weather conditions to coordinate further measures according to developments.

The operation is aimed at helping improve air quality in three of the country’s most densely populated areas, although its effectiveness will depend on the availability of suitable clouds. - September 19, 2026
