SANDAKAN: Three Lions Clubs in Sabah joined forces to organise the Mabul Island Project 4.0 in conjunction with Malaysia’s National Day celebrations, bringing a range of assistance and community services to residents of Mabul Island.
The programme was jointly organised by the Lions Club of Sandakan City, Lions Club of Tawau Megah and Lions Club of Lahad Datu, with the support of organising chairperson Desmond Lim Vui Lun.
A total of 74 Lions Club members, 29 volunteers, private clinic doctors and nurses, opticians, dental health personnel and representatives from the Environmental Department took part in the initiative.
The programme focused on various aspects of community welfare and development, including vision screening, food aid, healthcare, dental care, education and environmental protection, benefiting more than 1,300 residents.
Among the key highlights was the distribution of food baskets to 100 families, while 422 recipients received medical consultations.
Of the medical beneficiaries, 96 underwent blood pressure and blood sugar checks, while 70 received dental care and 112 underwent vision screening.
A total of 75 pairs of reading glasses were also distributed to those in need.
In the education component, 207 sets of oral care items, including toothbrushes and toothpaste, were given to children. The programme also included tooth-brushing activities, childhood cancer awareness and donations of school shoes.
As part of the environmental initiative, three recycling bins were installed on the island, while used clothing was also donated to the community.
The programme reflected the Lions Clubs’ commitment to community service under its motto, “We Serve”, providing assistance to those in need regardless of their identification status.
The presidents of all three Lions Clubs were also personally present and participated in the activities, they were president of Lions Club of Sandakan City; Edwin Chin Koon Kret, president of Lions Club of Tawau Mega; Chok Yee Lin, and, president of Lions Club of Lahad Datu; Raymond Lee Zhen Pang.
