Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Monday made a surprise visit to Lok Nayak Jai Prakash (LNJP) Hospital on the eve of International Nurses Day, interacting warmly with nursing staff and announcing a 27-fold increase in stipend for nursing interns — from Rs 500 to Rs 13,150, ending a wait of 27 years.

During her visit to the hospital, the Chief Minister toured several wards and interacted with nursing staff, listening to their experiences and acknowledging the challenges they face in their daily duties. In a heartfelt gesture, Gupta presented flowers to nurses, many of whom became emotional during the interaction. Several staff members also took selfies with the Chief Minister, describing the occasion as a memorable moment in their professional lives.

Speaking to the nursing staff, Gupta praised their dedication and compassion, calling nursing a symbol of humanity and selfless service.

“Doctors provide treatment, but it is nurses who give patients emotional strength and care that often helps them heal,” she said.

The Chief Minister also met nurses from several states, including Kerala, Rajasthan and Punjab, and highlighted the contribution of healthcare workers from across India in strengthening Delhi’s healthcare system and helping it achieve high standards of medical care.

According to officials, the revised stipend will benefit around 180 nursing interns. In addition, the Delhi Government distributed appointment letters to 1,388 nursing officers and 41 paramedical staff members as part of efforts to further strengthen healthcare services in the national capital.

Reaffirming her government’s commitment to healthcare workers, Gupta said the administration would continue working towards improving workplace conditions and safeguarding the rights and dignity of nursing professionals.
