In a modern twist on Chinese New Year traditions, I'm sure that some young adults are asking: “Do I really have to give angpau? What if I donate to charity instead?” HAHA because this is what happened around me! As they would think that this actually helps better to gain merits and reduce karma in the sense of buddhism. However, this idea challenges tradition but reflects contemporary values like social responsibility, empathy, and global awareness.
Angpau is symbolic of luck, prosperity, and blessings for the recipient. By donating that money to charity, you’re extending the gesture of generosity beyond family, helping people who are in real need. For instance, giving a red envelope to a child in an underprivileged community might spread more tangible happiness than a small cash gift to an adult family member who is financially stable.
Of course, some may see this as disrespectful to tradition. Chinese New Year has deep cultural roots, and angpau represents more than money. It represents family, filial piety, and continuity of customs. The key is balance: you could still give symbolic angpau to parents or children while donating a portion to charity. This way, you honor tradition while contributing positively to society.
This approach also reflects modern thinking about meaningful generosity. It emphasizes intention over obligation, encouraging individuals to consider what matters most: blindly following rituals or creating real impact. By thoughtfully choosing to donate, families demonstrate that the true spirit of Chinese New Year lies not only in tradition but also in spreading joy, compassion, and kindness….both within and beyond the family.
In short, skipping angpau in favor of charity isn’t disrespectful if approached thoughtfully. It’s about adapting tradition for modern values and teaching the next generation that generosity comes in many forms. Sometimes beyond cash, beyond family, and into the wider community.
