I learned from my long-time Chinese friends that the Lunar New Year hamper may contain symbolic goodies - mandarin oranges for wealth, abalone for luxury, bird-nest for nourishment, and chocolates to add sweetness to the year ahead. Hampers are often given as a sign of respect, especially to elders because CNY is one of the most meaningful celebrations in Chinese culture. It marks a fresh beginning filled with hope, prosperity & togetherness. Among the many traditions that shape this festive season, the practice of giving hampers continues to stand the test of time that passed down across generations.

During the walkabouts at Prima Avenue Cyberjaya with my grandchildren, in response to their inquisitive questions, I explained to them “CNY hampers are significant, culturally rooted tokens of goodwill, prosperity, and respect, traditionally exchanged to strengthen personal and professional relationships. The items curated in hampers are rarely random; they are chosen for their symbolic meanings, for health, abundance & good fortune in the coming year.”

In relationship building for both personal and corporate contexts, gifting hampers is a way to express gratitude, strengthen bonds, and show respect. This is cultural tradition, that these hampers serve as a way to honor traditions and share festive joy, making them a cornerstone of the New Year celebrations. Modern hampers often include health-focused items like ginseng, tea, and dried fruits, reflecting wishes for a wellness, happiness and prosperous year.

My eldest granddaughter, Iffah Faizah of Lower Secondary student at a Boarding School commented, “In our digital first world, the physical act of giving a hamper carries even greater significance. It represents effort, intention, and emotional presence, values that resonate deeply during festive seasons. Amid busy schedules and fast paced living, hampers offer a tangible way to express care and heartfelt wishes to our parents, relatives, teachers & best friends.”

I fully agree with Iffah that this lasting relevance is why CNY hampers continue to be cherished across generations. They are not simply festive gifts, but meaningful symbols that connect people to tradition, family & community togetherness with shared hopes for peaceful co-existence now and the future.
