THE Nagkaisa labor coalition on Saturday called for justice for slain workers and protection for laborers’ rights.
As the nation remembers All Saints’ Day, it said the government should hear the cry for justice for the families of slain labor leaders like Emmanuel “Manny” Asuncion, Leonides “Dennis” Sequeña and Orlando “Ka Lando” Abangan.
”While travel arrangements are being made for those visiting graves, ensure that justice also moves forward for those laid to rest and that the families they left behind have a means of livelihood,” the coalition said in a statement issued by its convenors Sonny Matula, Judy Ann Chan Miranda and Josua Mata.
”Bury the dead, but do not bury their cases,” it added.
The coalition reiterated its call for the lifting of the injunction issued by the Pasig Regional Trial Court Branch 152 against a wage increase in the National Capital Region. The Office of the Solicitor General, it said, should submit its required comment on the case without seeking another extension.
”What should be increased is wages, not extensions of time. Families’ meals cannot be put on hold while paperwork is delayed,” Nagkaisa said.
”A just wage recognizes the contribution of labor to the economy. Workers need it now as they work every day to provide for their families and the country,” it added.
