TAWAU: Seven men believed involved in cockfighting gambling were arrested while they were engaged in the sport in Kg Iban, Merotai Besar, on Sunday.
Tawau District Police Chief ACP Jasmin Hussin said four of the suspects were foreigners who entered and stayed in the country without any valid travel documents.
“During the raid, all the suspects tried to run away when they realised the presence of the police but the quick action of the officers and operatives managed to arrest them all.
“The raiding team from IPD Tawau assisted by members of the Bombalai Police Station also confiscated four cockerels and also cash,” he said in a media statement.
According to him, the police also destroyed the place where the gambling was done so that there would be no more activities like that.
Jasmin said that all the suspects and seized items were taken to the police station for further investigation.
The case will be investigated under Section 21 of the Animal Welfare Enactment 2015, Section 7(2) of the Open Gambling Act 1953 and Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63.
