A foreign shopper’s visit to a bakery in a prominent Bangsar convenience store turned into a distressing ordeal after she discovered a cockroach crawling over a loaf of bread on display. The incident, shared on Facebook by Wendy Kendall, has sparked outrage and led to the temporary closure of the bakery.
In her post, Wendy recounted heading to the bakery to purchase bread, only to be horrified by the sight of a cockroach wandering freely on the baked goods. She promptly alerted the staff but was met with confusion from two employees at the counter. Seeking further assistance, she approached a male staff member who removed the cockroach. However, to her dismay, the contaminated bread remained on display.
Wendy escalated the matter to the floor manager, who assured her it would be addressed. Yet, upon revisiting the bakery, she discovered that no action had been taken apart from the cockroach’s removal. “THEY WERE GOING TO LEAVE THE BAKED GOODS THERE,” she wrote, expressing her frustration and labeling the incident “absolutely disgraceful.”
Concerned about public health, Wendy sought out the bakery supervisor, urging them to remove the affected products. Adding to her dismay, she claimed the store attempted to suppress her complaints by deleting her social media tags of the store twice.
Store Responds with Apology and Immediate Action
Following widespread attention to the incident, the store issued a public apology via Facebook on January 16. Acknowledging the situation, the statement confirmed the immediate closure of the Bangsar bakery.
“All bakery products on display have been disposed of, and a comprehensive pest control and deep cleaning process is underway,” the statement read. The cleaning process includes sanitizing all areas of the bakery, from equipment to display units.
The store assured customers that the bakery would remain closed until an internal audit team completes a thorough inspection and verifies adherence to strict hygiene standards.
“We value your trust and apologize for any inconvenience caused. Our commitment to maintaining the highest standards of food safety and hygiene remains unwavering,” the store added.
The incident has sparked discussions about food safety and cleanliness in retail outlets, with many calling for stricter measures to prevent such occurrences.
