Coconut trade fair in Ilagan highlights push to expand Region 2 market

COCONUT farmers, processors, and entrepreneurs from across Region 2 (Cagayan Valley) gathered at XentroMall Ilagan–NorthStar Mall for the Regional Coconut Week Celebration Trade Fair 2026, a three-day event aimed at broadening market access and strengthening the region’s coconut industry on Aug. 11, 2026.

The regional trade fair, which concluded on Aug. 13, is part of broader activities this month to promote coconut development in the Cagayan Valley and connect local enterprises with wider markets.

The fair brought together participants from Isabela, Quirino, Nueva Vizcaya, and Cagayan. Organizers said the venue was designed not only to sell products but also to introduce a wider range of coconut-based goods to consumers and buyers, and to link producers with potential business partners.

This year’s theme, “Regenerating the Coconut Economy, Future-Proofing the Coconut Value Chain,” underscored the goal of moving the industry beyond raw nut trading. Exhibitors displayed food and nonfood items made from coconut, reflecting efforts to add value at the farm and community levels.

In his opening remarks, Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Region 2 Assistant Regional Director Michael Paggabao acknowledged the contributions of farmers, the product development work of processors, and the collaborative relationships supporting the sector.

Also overseeing DTI’s coconut industry programs, Paggabao said growth in the coconut industry depends on consistent work and coordination among all players.

He pointed out that programs and investments rolled out now may take time to show results, but are intended to build a more stable and competitive value chain in the region.

According to him, the continued involvement of farmers, entrepreneurs, government offices, and private partners remains key to achieving that objective.

Also speaking during the opening, Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Training Institute Region 2 Center Director Claris Alaska delivered a “Cocobuhayan” message that focused on livelihood potential.

Alaska emphasized that communities can benefit when farmers earn more from their coconut harvests and when enterprises develop products that command higher market prices.

She encouraged innovation among small businesses to create goods that meet consumer demand while making better use of available coconut resources.

The trade fair provides a venue for testing new products and receiving direct feedback from shoppers.

Organizers said that such interaction helps businesses adjust offerings, build customer relationships, and identify possible distribution channels.

For small enterprises and farming groups, adding value to coconut can mean additional income and a larger role within the agricultural supply chain.

Representatives from the Philippine Coconut Authority offices in Regions 1 and 2 and in the Cordillera Administrative Region, and XentroMalls joined the event.

Their participation, according to organizers, illustrates how government agencies and private mall operators can work together to create platforms for local products.
