We know that Malaysian food is good but is it good enough to “colonise” someone?

Recently, an angmoh influencer who goes by the name Mat Salleh Cari Makan (a.k.a Rhys William) posted a video on his social media pages to clarify that he is not the coloniser in Mat Kilau.

As we all know, Mat Kilau is a local blockbuster movie about how a Malay warrior fought the British colonisers pre-independence.

Ever since the movie’s release, Rhys said that Malaysians have compared him to the coloniser, Captain Syers and how they apparently looked similar.

Rhys’ post affirms that he is not the coloniser, but in fact how he was colonised by Malaysian food!

“I wasn’t offered to film in such a big movie. I was only offered a lot of food.”

He continued, “I hope no one will call me a coloniser anymore because I am a victim of colonisation by Malaysian food.”

“Looks the same, but it’s not him.”

Many netizens in the comments were amused by his post but also noted that Rhys and the actor do in fact look similar.

“That’s right, Rhys. The first time we watched Mat Kilau, I told my children that the coloniser looks like the mat salleh who hosts the food show. Even the way they speak is the same,” said a user.

To which Rhys responded, “Looks the same, but I’m not him.”

“That’s the thing. When I saw the preview, I was thinking about where I saw this person before,” said another user.

Others were saying that staying in Malaysia is a good thing.

“Staying in Malaysia is easy, Rhys. Our people are gracious. Peace,” said a user, to which Rhys responded by saying, “I agree. Malaysia is filled with polite people. I am so comfortable staying here.”

How he ended up in Malaysia

In a recent posting, Rhys talked about how he came to Malaysia for vacation for 2 weeks back then and during that time, he felt very comfortable here and knew that he wanted to stay in this country for a long time.

After that, he took the chance and moved here. Almost 9 years later, he is still staying here and will continue to do so in the future.
