Columbus, released in 2017, is a film directed by Kogonada, in which actors such as John Cho and Haley Lu Richardson focus on a person's father who goes back to Columbus to see his father who is in a coma. He then meets a person whose mother is suffering from a drug addiction and the pair of them get to each other.
As a filmmaker, this film has certainly inspired me to do a film like this with my friend and to make a film like Columbus, where I was the Director of Photographer and the Composer of the film, titled Diary Of a Hungry Man.
Why this film? I was introduced by my friend, who is the Director of the film and when watching this film, I was amazed by the number of elements which inspired me. Where do I begin? The cinematography, the look of the film and the shots used were some of the reasons why I got inspired for me to make this film. Each action shown in the film has its purpose. Combined with its shots, it's basically showing more of the story, rather than telling the story. In terms of the visual eye, it's visually pleasing to the eye and makes it something enjoyable to watch with the simple storyline.
When first watching the film, not going to lie, it was one of those films where at the first time of watching, it's a bit boring. But there's this saying which I think everyone has heard before: ‘Never judge a book by its cover’. Sometimes as humans, it's normal to judge something without knowing the proper context of it. The more I watched it, the more I was amazed by its beauty.
What did it teach me? Cinema is an art form - everyone has their own way of interpreting a message - and different people will have different opinions.
