Commando dies during diving exercise in Semporna

SEMPORNA: A member of the VAT 69 Commando Unit in his 40s died during a diving exercise in the waters off Pulau Mataking, here, Thursday morning.

It was learnt that the incident happened at 10.25am. Inspector Khairul Azhar Kamaruddin (pic) reportedly lost consciousness during the exercise near the Royal Malaysian Police and Malaysian Armed Forces joint post.

The officer arrived at the jetty at 8am and completed equipment preparation before proceeding to the training site.

An emergency information was received after the nearby resort informed that the victim lost consciousness.

The victim was given emergency treatment at the location of the incident before being brought to Semporna Hospital.

However, he was confirmed to have died while receiving treatment.

Confirming the death, Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Ismail said police are conducting an investigation to determine the cause of death and evaluating training procedures, the equipment and other “health and safety factors”.
