On this day sixty-eight years ago, Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj, the future first prime minister of Malaysia, proclaimed the Declaration of Independence for the Federation of Malaya at Padang Pahlawan, signifying the country's liberation from colonial rule.
Echoes of "Merdeka" reverberated once more in Banda Hilir as Melaka reenacted this momentous event. A Nash Rambler Custom Convertible 1951 car, carrying Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Melaka Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh, led a 600m procession from the Stadhuys Complex to the Independence Declaration Memorial, mirroring the original procession of Tunku Abdul Rahman and Datuk Panglima Bukit Gantang Haji Abdul Wahab Toh Muda Abdul Aziz.
This symbolic journey recalled the historic return of Tunku Abdul Rahman and the Perak Sultan's representative from London in 1956, embarking on the mission for independence. The reenactment also included representations of key figures such as MIC president Tan Sri S.A. Vigneswaran, Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing, State Tourism, Heritage, Arts and Culture Committee chairman Datuk Abdul Razak Abdul Rahman, and State Women, Family and Development Committee chairman Datuk Kalsom Nordin.
Upon arrival at the main stage, Anwar inspected the youth brigade parade unit and accepted a garland of flowers from Vigneswaran. The event proceeded with speeches from Abdul Razak and Ab Rauf, culminating in Anwar reading the Declaration of Independence and the resounding cry of "Merdeka! Merdeka! Merdeka!" filling the air.
The ceremonial presentation of Keris Sapukal, the keris held by Tunku Abdul Rahman during the declaration, and a musical theatre performance titled "Di Atas Runtuhan Kota Melaka Kita Dirikan Negara Baharu" (From the Ruins of Kota Melaka We Built a New Nation) highlighted the journey from the Japanese occupation to independence.
Approximately 1,500 participants, including uniformed bodies, NGOs, students, and political parties, took part in the procession and performances. Melaka has declared February 20th as a public holiday, commemorating this historic event and honoring the spirit of independence.
The official declaration of independence of the Federation of Malaya took place at the Merdeka Stadium in Kuala Lumpur on August 31, 1957, marking a significant milestone in the nation's history.
Melaka's decision to declare February 20th as a public holiday, starting this year, is a tribute to the enduring legacy of freedom and the sacrifices made by those who fought for independence. It serves as a reminder of the importance of unity, perseverance, and the preservation of heritage.
The reenactment of this historic event not only honors the past but also serves as a beacon of inspiration for the future. It reminds us of the ideals and principles that our nation was founded upon and encourages us to uphold them in our daily lives.
As we celebrate this day, let us remember the struggles and triumphs of our forefathers and strive to build a nation that is prosperous, harmonious, and inclusive for all its citizens.
Let us use this occasion to reflect on the values of freedom, unity, and democracy that have shaped our nation. As we move forward, let us work together to overcome challenges, bridge divides, and build a better future for generations to come.
May the spirit of independence that burns brightly in our hearts today inspire us to continue striving for progress, justice, and equality. Happy Independence Day to all Malaysians, and may our nation continue to prosper and thrive in the years ahead.
