Commercial crime on the rise with RM1.6bil in losses this year alone

Kuala Lumpur: There has been a rise in commercial crime this year, with 30,992 cases and losses amounting to RM1.6 billion recorded in the first nine months alone.

Bukit Aman commercial crime investigation department (CCID) director Ramli Yoosuf said fraud-related cases recorded the highest losses between January and September at RM1.24 billion, followed by breach of trust (RM310.18 million) and cybercrimes (RM31.14 million)

In the same period, there were 19,220 cases of online scams recorded with losses of RM687.6 million, with the highest loss involving non-existent investments at RM277.2 million.

“The number of commercial crime cases this year may surpass the 31,388 cases recorded in 2021,” Ramli told a press conference at the Kuala Lumpur police training centre here today.
