Commission gives go-ahead for controversial Drumcree parade

  • The Parades Commission has granted permission for the Orange Order to hold its Drumcree parade along Garvaghy Road in Portadown for the first time in nearly 30 years.
  • The march on 27 September faces strict restrictions, including a limit of 35 participants, no bands, and a ban on accompanying supporters.
  • Garvaghy Road, a predominantly nationalist area, was a major flashpoint during the Troubles, with parades blocked there since 1998 following violent clashes.
  • The decision comes after a High Court ruling quashed the commission's previous determination over the march due to procedural errors.
  • Sinn Féin vice president Michelle O’Neill strongly condemned the ruling, while DUP leader Gavin Robinson welcomed it as a long-overdue breakthrough.
