Communications Ministry mulls identity verification to protect children online

THE Ministry of Communications is currently reviewing key measures to strengthen online safety, including the possible implementation of user identity verification, in an effort to protect children from online sexual predators.

Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil expressed deep concern over a recent case involving a social media influencer allegedly sending sexually explicit messages to a 14-year-old girl.

“I am alarmed by what has happened recently, where an influencer was in contact with a 14-year-old child through lewd messages. This is happening in our society,” he said following the ministry’s monthly assembly.

“I am extremely worried, especially for young children who may not understand how to use social media properly. They look up to influencers, but some of these influencers, as alleged, are taking advantage of them. This is something I deeply regret.”

The Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) is currently investigating the case and other similar allegations involving minors.

Bernama cited todat that Fahmi also advised ministry staff to deactivate social media accounts of children under 13 and monitor their WhatsApp usage to prevent potential harm.

Separately, during his speech at the event, the minister highlighted the ministry’s role in ensuring reliable internet access, including 5G coverage, during the recently concluded 46th ASEAN Summit.

“I witnessed our team’s efforts to ensure that internet access, including 5G, at the International Media Centre was excellent. Although there were some media reports about WiFi issues, which were not under our jurisdiction, we stepped in to assist immediately,” he said.

He added that access points were increased to support media personnel on site.

At the same event, Fahmi officially announced the renaming of the ministry’s building from Kompleks Kementerian Komunikasi to *Menara Komunikasi*, symbolising national aspirations in technological advancement and communication excellence.

Also present were Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching, Ministry Secretary-General Datuk Mohamad Fauzi Md Isa, and CEO of the Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) Datin Paduka Nur-ul Afida Kamaludin. - May 27, 2025
