With the necktie no longer a requirement for students, a Malaysian parent is now asking for further leniency.

Parents should not fork out money for textbooks, and they should be given by the Ministry of Education (MOE) free of charge.

A Malaysian parent urged MOE to provide student textbooks for free

In a viral Threads post, the parent cited textbooks as a “must-have” item for the kids at school, noting that they are expensive. Due to the cost, the parent questioned why MOE is not providing them for free.

The individual added that Malaysian parents are financially strained after buying the school uniforms alone, especially those with multiple children.

“How do you move forward and improve when you can’t even provide the necessities for the students?”

Earlier, MOE announced that no party should coerce students into wearing neckties, saying that the decision was made in line with Malaysia’s hot and humid weather.

MOE also said that the ministry is always concerned about the need for parents to provide their children with school supplies before the start of the new school session.

“Your children’s education is on you, dear parents”

As the post is no longer accessible on Threads, another user managed to screenshot the post, prompting other social media users to express their disapproval over the remark, saying that parents are solely responsible for their children’s education.

Some netizens also pointed out the importance of family planning to avoid being stuck financially.

“Why do they have such a mentality? The children’s education is the parents’ responsibility.”

Another netizen sarcastically remarked by saying, “Everything should be free, including school uniforms, transportation, and canteen. It’s fine if you have too many kids, there’s no need for birth control.”
