BEAUFORT: A 57-year-old local contractor has been arrested after allegedly admitting to filing a false police report claiming he was assaulted and robbed, said District Police Chief Supt Champin Piuh.
The suspect, from Kampung Gerama, had initially lodged a report at the Criminal Investigation Division (CID) of the Beaufort District Police Headquarters alleging that he was attacked and robbed in Kg Lumatai.
In the report, he claimed that on Sunday at about 11.10pm, he was struck with a wooden object at the Kg Lumatai stall parking area and rendered unconscious.
He also alleged that a sling bag containing about RM3,000 in cash and two Vivo mobile phones had been taken.
However, police said preliminary investigations found the incident had been fabricated as the suspect was involved in an online non-existent loan case and did not want it known to others, including his wife.
Champin said the suspect later admitted during his statement that the robbery did not take place and the report was entirely made up.
A police report was subsequently lodged by the investigating officer, and the case is being investigated under Section 182 of the Penal Code for giving false information.
Acting on information, a CID team later recovered two mobile phones and a sling bag behind a shop lot at Leong Electrical Service.
