Controversial Orange Order march leaves Drumcree after getting last-minute green light

  • A controversial Orange Order march has departed Drumcree to march along Garvaghy Road in Portadown following a late-night legal clearance granted just hours before the procession began on Sunday morning.
  • The decision to allow the march was upheld during an unprecedented 2.15am High Court ruling in Belfast, which overturned an earlier injunction and supported the Parades Commission's decision to permit the parade.
  • Large crowds of nationalist demonstrators gathered along Garvaghy Road, a historical Troubles flashpoint, while Sinn Féin president Mary Lou McDonald urged the Secretary of State and the police chief constable to intervene.
  • The Parades Commission's ruling reversed a long-standing restriction that had prevented the Orange Order from completing the Garvaghy Road leg of its traditional route for more than 25 years.
  • Northern Ireland's senior judiciary, including Lady Chief Justice Siobhan Keegan, described the late-night legal proceedings as “unprecedented” and warned that such delayed decisions must not occur again.
