An investigation has been launched against Professor Emeritus Datuk Teo Kok Seong, a fellow with the National Council of Professors, following his recent controversial remarks regarding vernacular schools. Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail disclosed that the investigation is being conducted under Section 505 of the Penal Code and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.

Vernacular schools in Malaysia have been a topic of debate for decades, with supporters and detractors arguing over their merits and drawbacks. Saifuddin Nasution pointed out the increasing enrollment of Malay students in these schools as evidence of their appeal, stating, "When there is criticism against vernacular schools, there is also a large number choosing to attend them."

Teo faced accusations of making racially charged statements in a TikTok video, alleging that Chinese national-type schools foster racial tensions against Malays. During the ensuing debate, Teresa Kok (DAP-Seputeh) urged the police to investigate Teo's remarks, questioning why similar scrutiny was not applied to other DAP leaders like Tan Sri Lim Kit Siang and Tony Pua.

Saifuddin Nasution revealed that an inquiry paper against Lim has been forwarded to the attorney general, while the investigation paper concerning Pua will be submitted tomorrow. Additionally, he disclosed that the police have received 63 reports regarding statements made by Bozz Jebat, also known as Zool Amali Husin, for allegedly insulting Sarawak Chief Minister Tan Sri Abang Johari Abang Openg on YouTube. The police have initiated investigations under relevant laws, including the Sedition Act 1948 and the Communications and Multimedia Act.

Regarding the case of Teoh Beng Hock, who was found dead in 2009, Saifuddin Nasution stated that the investigation paper is currently with the Attorney General’s Chambers for further action. Following instructions from the AGC, the police had opened an investigation under Section 342 of the Penal Code and submitted their findings on August 11, 2023.

Teoh was discovered dead on the fifth floor of the Plaza Masalam building in Shah Alam after giving a statement at the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission office on the 14th floor. He served as the political secretary to former Seri Kembangan assemblyman Ean Yong Hian Wah, who was then the Selangor Local Government, New Villages Development, and Illegal Factories Legalisation Committee chairman.
