A statement conveyed through his legal counsel emphasised that, despite the outcome delivered by the High Court on December 26, Najib maintained confidence in the country’s judicial institutions and the broader legal framework. He urged the public to view the case with rationality and balance, framing the situation not solely as a matter affecting one individual but as an issue with wider implications for Malaysia’s institutions and governing principles.

Najib also stressed the importance of expressing differing views in a responsible and orderly manner. He cautioned against actions or rhetoric that could inflame tensions, disrupt public order, or weaken trust in the judiciary. According to the statement, public discourse surrounding the case should remain grounded in the rule of law and mutual respect, rather than emotional reactions or provocation.

Reflecting on his personal position, Najib acknowledged that he often felt compelled to bear the weight of the legal battle on his own. However, the statement indicated that this stance was rooted in principle rather than resentment. He reiterated that his long-standing aim had been to contribute to national stability, economic progress, and social harmony, even as he faced serious legal challenges.

Earlier on December 26, the High Court sentenced Najib to 15 years’ imprisonment and imposed a fine amounting to RM11.38 billion after finding him guilty of four counts of abuse of power and multiple charges of money laundering involving nearly RM2.2 billion linked to 1MDB. The court ordered that the prison terms for the abuse of power charges run concurrently, while stipulating an additional 10 years’ imprisonment for each charge should the fine remain unpaid.

The ruling also clarified that the new jail term would take effect only after Najib completes his existing sentence in the SRC International case, which involves the misappropriation of RM42 million. Najib is currently serving a six-year prison term for that conviction, which is scheduled to conclude in August 2028 or August 2029, depending on whether the RM50 million fine imposed in the SRC case is settled.

Despite the severity of the latest judgment, Najib’s legal team has indicated that appeals will be pursued through the Court of Appeal and, if necessary, the Federal Court. As a result, the December 26 decision is unlikely to mark the final chapter in the long-running 1MDB proceedings, which continue to carry significant political and institutional implications for the country.
