MOSCOW: Members of the heavily armed Wagner mercenary force left the southern Russian city of Rostov-on-Don on Saturday night, the region's governor Vasily Golubev said.

The convoys of trucks carrying the mercenaries, accompanied by tanks and other armoured vehicles, returned to their field camps outside the city, according to dpa, quoting the Russian state agency TASS reports.

Wagner boss Yevgeny Prigozhin led a brief uprising against the Russian military leadership on Saturday that saw his private troops take Rostov-on-Don, located near the border with Ukraine, and advance on Moscow.

Prigozhin reversed course on Saturday evening and announced he'd ordered his troops to return to their camps in order to prevent bloodshed, de-escalating a dramatic power struggle with President Vladimir Putin.
