Kota Kinabalu: A cook moonlighting as a drug courier was caught with over a kilo of ganja at a taxi terminal in Jalan Padang, Bandaran Berjaya, here, on Thursday.

The 26-year-old suspect was arrested around 3.45pm by a Narcotics Crime Investigation Department (JSJN) team from the State Police Headquarters.

State JSJN Chief ACP Alhusin Halil said the man was acting suspiciously before police moved in to inspect the parcel he was carrying.

“Checks found nine transparent plastic packets containing compressed dried leaves believed to be ganja weighing 1.06kg, worth about RM3,500,” he said on Thursday.

The suspect tested positive for THC and had two previous drug-related records.

He later admitted taking payment from another man to collect and deliver the parcel to a house in Kepayan.

A follow-up raid on a double-storey house in Taman Kepayan led to the arrest of a 30-year-old local man believed to be behind the operation.

Police found a small packet containing 3.52g of ganja worth RM50 in his bedroom.

Both men tested positive for THC and are being investigated under Sections 39B, 6 and 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.

Police also seized two mobile phones including an iPhone 13 and an iPhone 13 Pro Max, to assist investigations.

Alhusin said the success was due to cooperation between JSJN Sabah and the Malaysian Border Control Agency (AKPS), adding that operations against parcel-based drug syndicates will continue.
