What began as a routine traffic enforcement drive at Rampurghat in the Paonta Sahib police subdivision of Sirmaur district escalated into a serious law-and-order incident after a scooter rider allegedly objected to being challaned for traffic violations and an on-duty police official was assaulted.

A complaint was filed by Head Constable Pradeep Kumar, posted at the Rampurghat police booth, who alleged he was attacked while carrying out traffic enforcement duties. According to the complaint, a police team was conducting routine checks in the Rampurghat, Kunja Matralion and Pahadi Colony areas when a scooter (bearing registration number HP17H-1248) was stopped. The rider was allegedly not wearing a helmet and failed to produce a valid driving licence. A challan was subsequently issued under the Motor Vehicles Act.

The scooter rider was identified as Mohit, while the pillion rider was his mother, Savita, both residents of Shivpur, Paonta Sahib. The complainant said shortly after the challan was issued, Mohit allegedly called his father, Sachin, who arrived at the spot in an Alto car.

An argument over the challan allegedly escalated into violence. The complainant stated that Sachin and Mohit grabbed him by the neck, while Savita allegedly slapped him. Sachin is also accused of snatching a gold earring from policeman’s left ear, causing bleeding and injuries. The accused allegedly fled the scene after the assault. The police registered a case. Sachin was arrested and remanded to three days of police custody by the court. Savita was also arrested.
