BEAUFORT: A police corporal suspected of drug abuse was charged at the Beaufort Court on Monday after an initial urine screening tested positive for amphetamine and methamphetamine.
The accused pleaded not guilty to a charge under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
He was reportedly detained by the Beaufort District Police Headquarters’ Narcotics Criminal Investigation Division on July 27.
Beaufort District Police Chief Supt Champin Piuh said the police would not compromise with any officer or personnel involved in drug abuse or drug trafficking.
He said firm action would be taken in accordance with the law and prevailing regulations, regardless of rank or position.
“The police have also received information from the public regarding allegations of the officer’s possible involvement in drug trafficking activities in the Kuala Penyu and Menumbok areas.
“However, the allegations are still under investigation and intelligence gathering by the authorities to verify the information and determine the officer’s actual level of involvement,” he said in a statement Tuesday.
Champin stressed that all allegations must be verified through investigations and should not be treated as facts until proven.
He said drug abuse among police personnel could affect discipline and job performance, tarnish the image of the force and erode public confidence in the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM).
He added that the police would continue to strengthen efforts to uphold the integrity and professionalism of all officers and personnel, ensuring they carried out their duties responsibly, with discipline and in accordance with the law.
