A suspected nexus between a police official and drug traffickers has surfaced in what is being described as Sirsa’s biggest opium seizure, after investigators alleged that a portion of the contraband worth around Rs 4.5 crore was siphoned off by the investigating officer himself.

According to ASP Adarshdeep Singh, preliminary investigations have revealed the involvement of ASI Ranbir Singh, who was posted at Ding police station. The officer allegedly kept a portion of the seized opium while officially recording the recovery as 88.970 kg.

“Preliminary investigations revealed the involvement of ASI Ranbir Singh, who allegedly retained a part of the seized opium and recorded the recovery as 88.970 kg,” the ASP said.

SP Deepak Saharan dismissed Ranbir Singh from service. A case has also been registered against him and the investigation has been transferred to the Anti-Narcotics Bureau (ANB).

The ASP said the quantity of opium allegedly misappropriated was yet to be ascertained. “We are also probing whether the dismissed officer had links with traffickers or intended to sell the contraband himself,” he said.
