POLICE in Alor Setar are intensifying efforts to trace the weapon allegedly used by a suspect in the fatal stabbing of his mother, a bank operations executive, at a house in Taman Sultan Abdul Halim along Jalan Tanjung Bendahara here yesterday.

Kota Setar district police chief Assistant Commissioner Syed Basri Syed Ali said searches to recover the weapon were still ongoing.

“At this stage, efforts to locate the weapon are actively being carried out,” he said when contacted today.

Initial investigations indicate that the suspect acted alone in the attack, which resulted in the death of his mother.

“The suspect has anger management issues and preliminary investigations suggest the incident was triggered by financial problems.

“However, further investigations are still ongoing, and the suspect has been remanded for seven days until Feb 9 to assist with the investigation,” he said.

The victim was earlier identified as Zahrullail Basir, 52, who worked as an operations executive at a bank in the city. She was found dead at her home with three stab wounds to her body.

Police later arrested the 29-year-old suspect at 8.34pm last night while he was travelling on an express bus heading towards Selangor.

The case remains under investigation as authorities work to establish the full circumstances surrounding the killing and recover the weapon believed to have been used in the attack. - February 3, 2026
