KUALA LUMPUR – Police have detained a 31-year-old foreign man and seized a silver Proton Waja car after a video showing a vehicle zooming past a street with firecrackers shooting out of the boot went viral.

Sentul police chief Ahamad Sukarno Mohd Zahari said the man, who has been remanded to aid in investigations, did not possess any criminal records.

He added that that 14-second video went viral and that the car was being driven along Jalan 2/3A Pusat Bandar Utara here.

According to a statement today, the case is being investigated under Section 7 of the Explosives Act 1957 for unlawfully and maliciously causing an explosion likely to endanger life or to cause serious injury to property.

Upon conviction, whether any explosion does or does not take place and whether any injury to person or property has been actually caused or not, be liable, to imprisonment for seven years, or to a fine of RM10,000, or both.

In February, Local Government Development Minister Nga Kor Ming said the federal government agreed to legalise firecrackers and fireworks, bringing benefits such as revenue and improved public safety.

Following this, he said all imported firecrackers and fireworks would require the approval and verification of the relevant authorities, as well as issuing import licences to ensure all firecrackers and fireworks brought into the country are safe. – November 13, 2023
