KUALA LUMPUR – Police have launched an investigation into former Damansara member of parliament Tony Pua following a Facebook post commenting on royal decrees and the Rukun Negara.
Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department director Datuk Seri M. Kumar said the probe began after authorities received 28 reports nationwide concerning the post, local media reported.
The case is being investigated under Section 505(b) of the Penal Code, which deals with statements conducive to public mischief, and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.
"We have launched investigations after receiving police reports from across the country," he said, as quoted by NST Online.
When asked whether Pua would be called to assist in the investigation, Kumar said this would happen soon.
"Of course, we will call all parties involved to assist in the investigation," he added.
Umno secretary-general Datuk Dr. Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki criticised Pua’s comments, calling them “rude” and disrespectful to the constitutional monarchy.
Describing Pua’s behaviour as “kaduk naik junjung” (a Malay idiom meaning someone has become arrogant or overconfident), Asyraf emphasised that freedom of speech should not be used as a licence to mock the monarchy.
“Claiming to be constitutionally aware, but shallow in manners towards the Royal Institution. When the Sultan’s decree is mocked, that is not freedom of speech, that is rude. Tony Pua is akin to a betel creeper placed on a pedestal, forgetting manners and limits. Umno stands with His Majesty!” he wrote on Facebook.
Pua’s controversial post claimed that Malaysians do not live under a system where monarchical decrees are binding in all aspects of life. He also urged citizens to read and understand the principles of the Rukun Negara and the Federal Constitution, stressing loyalty to “Raja and Negara” under the Constitution, rather than to royal decrees alone.
The issue appears linked to a previous directive from the Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, who advised Seri Kembangan assemblywoman Wong Siew Ki and former Selangor Exco member Ronnie Liu to attend Dataran Selangor at least once a week. The aim was to instil respect for the Rukun Negara and the monarchy, fostering high standards of decorum and civility.
The Sultan’s guidance followed controversy over Wong and Liu’s responses to his order to halt pig farming in Selangor. Wong drew criticism for suggesting a modern, closed-system continuation of pig farming, while Liu urged dissatisfied farmers to take the matter to court via judicial review. — May 20, 2026
