POLICE have recorded statements from nine individuals linked to the latest alleged bullying case at Universiti Pertahanan Nasional Malaysia (UPNM).
Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Rusdi Mohd Isa said statements have also been taken from the alleged 19-year-old victim who is a third-year cadet at UPNM.
Police are investigating under Section 325 of the Penal Code for causing grievous hurt to another person, which is punishable by a jail sentence of up to seven years, and a fine.
In a statement yesterday, Rusdi confirmed receiving a police report about the case on November 8 although the incident reportedly happened earlier on October 21 at about 10.45pm near UPNM’s marching ground, following a roll call.
“The victim, aged 19, is reported to have suffered fractured ribs and spine after being stepped on by a Year 3 student. The victim is still being treated for the injuries," he said.
The case has been widely shared on social media, sparking outrage after a woman claimed her brother, a 19-year-old UPNM cadet, suffered fractures to his ribs after being stomped on by a senior.
In 2017, UPNM’s navy cadet Zulfarhan Osman Zulkarnain died after suffering burns on 80 per cent of his body when he was tortured with a steam iron.
On July 23, six were sentenced to death for Zulfarhan’s death after the Court of Appeal set aside their initial conviction for the offence of causing death with no intent to kill.
