POILCE in Penang have recorded one of their largest narcotics seizures of the year after confiscating drugs with an estimated street value of RM9.7 million during two coordinated raids in Mak Mandin, Butterworth.
Penang police chief Datuk Dennis Lim Kwang Keng said the operation began in the early hours of June 19 when officers arrested a 35-year-old suspected drug trafficker at a car park at about 2am.
Following initial questioning, the suspect directed investigators to a vehicle where police recovered an assortment of narcotics, including Eramin 5 tablets and ecstasy, concealed in the boot.
The suspect subsequently led officers to a nearby condominium, where a 40-year-old woman believed to be his accomplice was arrested and additional drugs were seized.
"The total seizure amounted to RM9.7 million in black market value," Lim told a media briefing today.
Both suspects have been remanded to facilitate investigations under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carries a sentence of life imprisonment upon conviction.
Violent Assault at Jelutong Temple
Separately, police have arrested six of seven suspects believed to be involved in a violent assault at a temple in Jelutong three days after the drug operation.
The attack left a 31-year-old man with severed fingers after he was allegedly assaulted by a group armed with parang.
A 64-year-old temple caretaker, who attempted to intervene, also suffered the loss of one finger during the incident.
Lim said police are continuing to hunt three additional suspects believed to have participated in the attack, while both victims remain in stable condition.
Investigations indicate the assault was triggered by a misunderstanding after one of the victims was accused of stealing a smartphone belonging to one of the attackers.
Police are also investigating whether the suspects have links to organised crime groups.
Enforcement Intensifies against World Cup Betting
Lim said police have stepped up enforcement against illegal online gambling in conjunction with the ongoing FIFA World Cup being hosted by Canada, the United States and Mexico.
Since the tournament began, officers have arrested 12 suspects aged between 27 and 64 for alleged involvement in online football betting.
Investigators are examining mobile phones seized from the suspects after determining they had been placing bets through dedicated gambling applications.
Lim urged football fans to enjoy the tournament responsibly and avoid participating in illegal gambling activities. - June 23, 2026
