KUALA LUMPUR – Former Damansara MP Tony Pua said he was questioned by police today following a Facebook post concerning the Rukun Negara.

The questioning, conducted at a Petaling Jaya police station, lasted about 40 minutes. Pua said he fully cooperated with two officers from the Shah Alam district police.

"I have received a call from IPD Shah Alam at approximately 1.30pm today to arrange an appointment to have my witness statement taken over my Rukun Negara post under Section 112 of the Criminal Procedure Code. It was an investigation under Section 505 of the Penal Code and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act," he said on Facebook.

Pua added that while he had initially offered to appear the following morning, the officer in charge instructed that his statement be taken the same day.

He confirmed he authored the post himself and that the intent was simply “to share my views of Rukun Negara.”

He noted that the investigation was prompted by more than 80 police reports filed across the country, the first of which was lodged in Sri Muda, Shah Alam.

"The contents of the police reports were mostly replicated," he said.

The investigation stems from Pua’s post, in which he argued that Malaysia does not operate under a system where royal decrees are binding in all aspects of governance and public life.

He urged Malaysians to understand the Rukun Negara and the Federal Constitution, stressing that loyalty should be directed to “Raja dan Negara,” rather than solely to royal decrees.

Earlier, Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department director Datuk Seri M. Kumar confirmed the probe is being conducted under Section 505(b) of the Penal Code for statements conducive to public mischief and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.

Pua’s comments drew criticism from political parties. Umno secretary-general Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki described the remarks as “rude” and disrespectful to Malaysia’s constitutional monarchy.

PAS also condemned Pua’s response to the Sultan of Selangor’s royal decree. PAS secretary-general Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan said the Sultan’s reminder emphasised respect for the Federal Constitution, racial harmony, and sensitivities that unite Malaysia’s multiracial society.

“Tony Pua’s careless response to the royal decree has unfortunately heightened public anxiety and triggered another unnecessary controversy at a time when racial and religious tensions are already high,” Takiyuddin said, stressing that statements regarding the Malay Rulers must be made carefully and respectfully. - May 21, 2026
