Cops to record Akmal's statement tonight over upside down flag issue

UMNO Youth chief Datuk Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh has been summoned by the police to give his statement regarding the demonstration he led in front of a shop in Kepala Batas yesterday regarding the Jalur Gemilang issue.

The Merlimau State Assemblyman (ADUN) is scheduled to give a statement at the Dang Wangi District Police Headquarters (IPD) at 11pm tonight.

Meanwhile, in a video post on Facebook, Akmal said he was contacted by an investigating officer from Bukit Aman who asked him to appear at the Dang Wangi IPD tonight.

"I will cooperate as best I can. If this is the price to pay to protect the honour of this country, that's fine, I am willing and will continue to fight until the last drop.

"Not afraid, not giving up!" said the Melaka Rural Development, Agriculture and Food Security Exco.

Yesterday, he was reported to have led more than 300 individuals from Umno, Bersatu and Pas in a 1.4-kilometre march to protest the actions of a hardware store that displayed the national flag upside down.

DAP had since instructed its Youth wing (Dapsy) nationwide to file a police report against the Umno leader's actions.

Its secretary-general, Anthony Loke, said the police report was made under Section 503 of the Penal Code, which is criminal intimidation, and Section 504 of the Penal Code, which is intentionally issuing a defamatory statement with the intent to cause disorder.

He added that Akmal's actions ignored warnings from the Inspector-General of Police and the Penang Police Chief not to hold public gatherings.

Penang DAP chairman, Steven Sim, also urged the authorities to take action, describing the march as provocative and illegal and claiming that it undermined efforts to foster unity in conjunction with Merdeka month. – August 15, 2025
