What to see and what to do in Corfu?

The old town and its cobblestone streets

A UNESCO World Heritage site, Corfu's old town features Byzantine, Venetian, French and British influences. Lose yourself in the old town's cobblestone streets, step into its churches and museums, experience the unique ambience of this historic Greek city that hums year-round with modern-day energy. Check out the highlights of Corfu Town here.

In the footsteps of Sisi and the Duke of Edinburgh

Austrian Empress Sisi, German Emperor Wilhelm II and Philip, the husband of Elizabeth II of Great Britain, were all captivated by Corfu, the favourite Greek island of 19 and 20 century European monarchs. Today, you can visit the hanging gardens of Achilleion, the sumptuous palace of Sisi, admire the view from the 'Kaiser's Throne', a boulder where Emperor Wilhelm liked to meditate, and wander beneath the hundred-year-old trees on the Mon Repos estate where Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, was born.

Explore the island off the beaten track

Of course you will want to visit historical sites and relax on the beach in the Ionian island, but try taking a detour through the island's picturesque villages for a delightful glimpse into local life. Plus, there are myriad activities for exploring the island and its untamed beauty a different way.

Attend local fetes and festivities

Throughout the year, take your pick of unique traditional events such as the Corfu Carnival, a legacy of the Venetians: a fancy-dress parade on the Esplanade followed by the burning of King Carnival. At Easter, residents in traditional garb throw clay pots filled with water, botidès, from balconies in the old town. And for the Varkarola Festival, mid-August, a procession of traditional boats, or caïques, set out into the Bay of Paleokastritsa where a boat is burned to symbolise the lifting of the Ottoman siege.

The best places to swim in Corfu

The island is famous for its sandy beaches and small coves of crystalline water. The eastern coast attracts the biggest crowds, especially in the bays of Dassia and Ipsos, amidst sprawling hotel complexes, and in the small seaside resorts around Benitses. The island is also famous for its emerald-green landscapes, which contrast beautifully with the turquoise waters of the Ionian Sea. Visitors are drawn to its UNESCO-listed old town, idyllic beaches such as Paleokastritsa and Canal d’Amour, and iconic landmarks including the Achilleion Palace, built for Empress Elisabeth of Austria (Sisi). Is Corfu cheap or expensive?

Corfu is generally considered one of the more affordable Greek islands, offering good value for money compared with destinations such as Mykonos or Santorini.
