THE corn vendor who ignited a racial controversy by displaying an insensitive sign has issued a public apology to all Malaysians, especially the Indian community, for his actions.
National Unity Minister Datuk Aaron Ago Dagang confirmed the apology in a statement on X, stating that the vendor has also committed to refraining from such behaviour in the future.
The apology came after efforts by community leaders who played a crucial role in mediating the situation. The trader said he had no intention of causing hurt to any race in Malaysia, and apologised.
Their involvement in resolving the issue helped reinforce the role of Neighborhood Watch (KRT) leaders as key figures in promoting unity and addressing conflicts.
The incident highlights the importance of cooperation between local leaders and authorities in fostering a peaceful, harmonious environment, Aaron said.
The apology took place at a restaurant in Sepang on Saturday, where representatives from the Indian community, local residents, influencers, as well as officials from the National Unity and Integration Department, and the police were present.
Aaron reiterated the importance of being mindful of the impact of our words and actions on others, particularly in a country as diverse as Malaysia, where different religions, cultures, and ethnicities coexist. He emphasised that ensuring mutual respect and understanding is crucial to preventing misunderstandings and fostering social cohesion.
"We must continue to uphold the values of unity, respect, and acceptance of differences to preserve harmony in our multi-ethnic society," Aaron stressed.
He added that national unity can only be achieved when everyone actively contributes to understanding and appreciating one another's differences. – February 17, 2025
