Cornell University president calls gang rape allegations ‘deeply disturbing’

Cornell University’s president has described the alleged gang rape of a student at a fraternity house in 2024 as “deeply disturbing.”

In an eight-minute video statement to the Cornell community, Michael Kotlikoff said the past week had been among the most difficult in the university’s history.

Pressure has grown on Cornell over how it handled allegations a woman was sexually assaulted by several fraternity members in 2024.

The case has renewed attention on a New York state law which makes it harder to prosecute sexual assaults where the victim consumed alcohol or drugs, even if they later became too intoxicated to consent.

It has attracted attention in the US and abroad, with figures including British actor Florence Pugh and Democratic congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez speaking out.
