Corrupt officials think by going to perform pilgrimage (Umrah or Hajj), God has forgiven their sins, said Deputy Inspector General of Police Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay said recently.

While speaking at Prasarana’s Integrity Day, he said that the sin against society is greater because corruption is eating into other people's money.

“Many among our Muslim Malays still think this corruption is okay. They feel that they will be free of corruption by going to the Hajj for several years and that their sin is over. They can return from the pilgrimage (Hajj) clean as a white cloth.”

"They feel by going to Umrah (pilgrimage), everything is clear. They assume that his act of corruption is okay by going on pilgrimage by apologising for their sins. They repeatedly go to Hajj to apologise and ask for forgiveness, and that God forgives.”

“No,” categorically, he said. “This corruption is our fault with society, and is unfortunate when Muslim Malays themselves seem to consider corruption as a culture.”

In a fiery speech, as seen in the video, he repeated: "It is sad that there are some Muslims who think that corruption is like a culture and think there is nothing wrong with corruption. Everyone can take a bribe.”

Ayob Khan explained that this was one of the reasons corruption prevails as a big issue. Corruption is the country's number one enemy.

Corruption has hurt Malaysia, he said in a TikTok video uploaded on his official social media account.

Ayob Khan said it was important for all parties to combat corruption from the top to the bottom.

“Corruption can only be countered by cracking down on the top officials and even the low-ranking officials.”

“If we take action at the top, the bottom will be afraid. But if the top is left, the top encourages corruption, the bottom will follow suit and be corrupt.”
