The cases, unfolding between January 22 and January 30, 2026, stem from a large-scale investigation by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) into alleged misconduct linked to defence procurement and the management of the Armed Forces Welfare Fund (TKAT). The probe has brought unprecedented scrutiny to the Ministry of Defence and senior military leadership.

The first major case emerged on January 22, when former army chief Tan Sri Muhammad Hafizuddeain Jantan appeared before the Sessions Court in Kuala Lumpur. He was charged with four counts of money laundering involving more than RM2.12 million, allegedly connected to military procurement tenders. His wife, Salwani Anuar, faced separate charges involving RM77,000. Both denied the allegations. The case marked the first time a serving army chief had been charged over alleged financial crimes tied to defence contracts.

On January 23, Muhammad Hafizuddeain faced additional charges in Shah Alam, accused of receiving RM145,000 in proceeds from unlawful activities. On the same day, former chief of defence force Tan Sri Mohd Nizam Jaffar was charged in Kuala Lumpur with multiple counts of abusing his position for gratification amounting to RM752,481.90, along with a criminal breach of trust charge involving RM3 million. He pleaded not guilty to all counts.

The MACC confirmed that the investigation, launched on October 7, 2025, has so far led to the arrest of 23 individuals, including senior and high-ranking military officers. The commission described the cases as highly sensitive due to the ranks involved and the use of public funds.

The crackdown has also drawn national attention, with the Yang di-Pertuan Agong expressing deep disappointment over allegations reaching the highest levels of the armed forces, while Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim reiterated the government’s zero-tolerance approach to corruption, stressing that accountability applies equally to all, regardless of position or influence.
