ALOR SETAR: Corruption is an issue affecting all religions and races, insists Perikatan Nasional (PN) chairman Muhyiddin Yassin.
“The issue of corruption is widespread. Non-Muslims commit corruption, Muslims commit corruption,” he said.
“I don’t think this is something we should be debating. This is the reality (all races being involved in corruption).
“That’s why PN is firmly against abuse of power, corruption, misappropriation and various other issues.
“That has been our stand from the beginning,” Muhyiddin told reporters after the opening ceremony for the PAS muktamar (annual general assembly) here.
Muhyiddin was asked to comment on allegations that non-Muslims and non-Bumiputeras were at the root of corruption in Malaysia, a claim that PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang made last month.
In a Facebook post, Hadi also said it was a fact that the majority of those involved in ruining the country’s politics and economy were non-Muslims and non-Malays.
It was previously reported that 28 police reports were lodged against Hadi over his claim.
Police have opened an investigation into Hadi’s claims under a Penal Code provision on statements conducive to public mischief and incitement.
Hadi is also being investigated for abuse of network services under the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.
The Marang MP, who was called in for questioning on Monday, today said he would answer all further queries related to his claim in court.
