In a powerful statement, Deputy Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay made it clear that corruption is a moral failing that transcends racial boundaries, and those who attempt to blame non-Muslims for their own corrupt practices are not only misguided but deeply un-Islamic. His remarks, delivered in a video posted on Facebook on August 7, 2024, serve as a timely reminder that the fight against corruption requires introspection and accountability, not scapegoating.

Ayob Khan emphasized that true Muslims, guided by strong faith, would never resort to taking bribes or turning the issue of corruption into a racial conflict. “As true Muslims, if our faith is strong, we will not take bribes and will not blame others. No need to blame the non-Muslims,” he asserted. His comments come at a time when corruption, despite being explicitly condemned in the holy book, continues to plague certain sectors of Malaysian society, with many of those implicated being Muslims themselves.

Addressing the issue of accountability, Ayob Khan urged officers to report any bribery attempts to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) instead of allowing such offers to be swept under the rug or manipulated by those who seek to distort the truth. “These individuals are distorting the news to challenge the integrity of the MACC or government agencies,” he said, criticizing those who attempt to justify corrupt practices.

Ayob Khan did not mince words when describing the moral degradation that accompanies corruption, labeling those who accept bribes as “the most heinous individuals.” He criticized the normalization of bribery within certain circles, where it is perceived as a common practice rather than a serious ethical breach. “They believe accepting bribes is not wrong simply because it is a common practice within their peers. Such individuals are the most despicable,” he declared firmly.

To effectively combat corruption, Ayob Khan stressed the importance of targeting higher-ups who perpetuate this culture. He warned that if leaders who condone bribery are not held accountable, their subordinates will feel emboldened to continue such practices with impunity. “If we allow higher-ups who commit corruption practices to go unpunished, their subordinates will inevitably follow suit and engage in rampant bribery,” he warned.

In a sobering declaration, Ayob Khan identified corruption as the nation’s new number one enemy, overtaking narcotics, which held that title from 1983 until 2024. “Now, corruption is our number one enemy,” he declared, signaling a shift in focus for national law enforcement priorities.

Ayob Khan concluded by calling for the appointment of leaders who are unequivocally against corruption to eradicate the culture of bribery that has taken root. He also challenged those guilty of taking bribes to apologize to all Malaysians, recognizing the widespread harm their actions have caused.

Ayob Khan, in his public declaration on anti-corruption awareness and concern over rampant bribery, did not name anyone specifically.

However, his remarks stand in stark contrast to those of PAS president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang, who in 2022 controversially blamed non-Malays for corrupting the Malay community through their influence over the economy and politics. Ayob Khan’s message is clear: corruption is a personal failing, not a racial or religious issue, and it is only through collective integrity and accountability that it can be eradicated.
