Twelve opposition parties have come together to form a loose coalition with the intention of pressing national issues that they claim the Madani Government has yet to address.

Bersatu president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin explained after a joint opposition leaders’ meeting in Kuala Lumpur that while consensus had been achieved, the coalition’s official name would only be revealed later. The alliance includes Bersatu, PAS, Gerakan, Pejuang, Muda, MIPP, Putra, PPP, Berjasa, PSM, MAP and Iman. An unregistered organisation, Bersepakat Hak Rakyat Malaysia (Urimai), was also listed among those participating.

The meeting resolved to widen engagement beyond political parties by involving traders, entrepreneurs, and other community representatives, with the goal of understanding their challenges and shaping solutions that could be proposed to the government. The upcoming 13th Malaysia Plan (RMK13), which opposition leaders believe overlooks major public concerns, was also highlighted as a key area of focus.

Muhyiddin, who also chairs Perikatan Nasional, emphasised that the formation of this coalition was an early step, laying the foundation for further joint action. The rising cost of living, described as the most pressing problem faced by Malaysians, topped the discussion list. Opposition leaders argued that despite official figures showing low inflation, households were still struggling with increasing prices of daily essentials.

They pointed to the restructuring of fuel subsidies, which has pushed logistics costs higher, as well as the broader implementation of the sales and service tax (SST) since July, now covering nearly 6,000 types of goods. Both measures, they claimed, had worsened the burden on ordinary citizens. Businesses, especially small and medium enterprises, were also said to be suffering from higher operational expenses, leaving traders in a difficult position.

While the coalition’s electoral strategy has yet to be finalised, opposition leaders signalled that the new platform would allow them to coordinate on economic, social, and educational issues collectively rather than acting in isolation. The emphasis, they maintained, would remain on presenting common solutions rather than merely competing for political ground.
